India’s industrial revolution: Cabinet approves 12 new industrial cities under National Industrial Corridor Development Programme

India is on the brink of a transformative leap in its industrial landscape as the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, chaired by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, has approved 12 new project proposals under the National Industrial Corridor Development Programme (NICDP). With an estimated investment of Rs. 28,602 crore, this ambitious decision is set to revamp the country’s industrial framework, through Industrial Cities, significantly boosting economic growth and global competitiveness.

A “Golden Necklace” of industrial smart cities

Under this initiative, 12 new industrial cities and nodes will be strategically established across 10 states along 6 major corridors. These industrial areas will be located in Khurpia in Uttarakhand, Rajpura-Patiala in Punjab, Dighi in Maharashtra, Palakkad in Kerala, Agra and Prayagraj in Uttar Pradesh, Gaya in Bihar, Zaheerabad in Telangana, Orvakal and Kopparthy in Andhra Pradesh, and Jodhpur-Pali in Rajasthan.

Key highlights:

1. Strategic investments:

The NICDP aims to develop a robust industrial ecosystem by attracting investments from large anchor industries as well as Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs). These industrial nodes are expected to act as catalysts in achieving $2 trillion in exports by 2030, aligning with the government’s vision of a self-reliant and globally competitive India.

2. Smart cities and modern infrastructure:

The new industrial cities will be developed as greenfield smart cities built to global standards, designed “ahead of demand” based on the ‘plug-n-play’ and ‘walk-to-work’ concepts. This approach ensures that these cities will be equipped with advanced infrastructure to support sustainable and efficient industrial operations.

3. Alignment with PM GatiShakti:

These projects will be integrated with the PM GatiShakti National Master Plan, featuring multi-modal connectivity infrastructure to ensure the seamless movement of people, goods, and services. These industrial cities are envisioned as growth centers, capable of transforming entire regions through strategic development.

Vision for a ‘Viksit Bharat’:

The approval of these projects marks a significant step towards realizing the vision of ‘Viksit Bharat’ or a developed India. By positioning India as a formidable player in the Global Value Chains (GVC), the NICDP will provide developed land parcels ready for immediate allotment, making it easier for both domestic and international investors to establish manufacturing units in India. This initiative is closely aligned with the broader objective of fostering an ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ or a self-reliant India, promoting economic growth through enhanced industrial output and employment.

Economic impact and employment generation:

The NICDP is expected to generate substantial employment opportunities, with an estimated 1 million direct jobs and up to 3 million indirect jobs being created through planned industrialization. This not only provides livelihood opportunities but also contributes to the socio-economic upliftment of the regions where these projects are being implemented.

Commitment to sustainable development:

The projects under NICDP are designed with a strong focus on sustainability, incorporating ICT-enabled utilities and green technologies to minimize environmental impact. By providing quality, reliable, and sustainable infrastructure, the government aims to create industrial cities that are not just economic hubs but also models of environmental stewardship.

Redefining india’s industrial landscape:

The approval of 12 new industrial nodes under NICDP marks a significant milestone in India’s journey toward becoming a global manufacturing powerhouse. With a strategic focus on integrated development, sustainable infrastructure, and seamless connectivity, these projects are set to redefine India’s industrial landscape and drive the nation’s economic growth for years to come.

In addition to these new approvals, NICDP has already seen the completion of four projects, with another four currently under implementation. This continued progress underscores the government’s commitment to transforming India’s industrial sector and fostering a vibrant, sustainable, and inclusive economic environment.

These projects will not only impact industrial production and job creation but will also play a crucial role in balanced regional development and the overall transformation of the country. Under the leadership of the Prime Minister, the government aims to build an industrial framework that positions India as a competitive global player and elevates the nation’s economy to new heights.
