Union Minister of textiles Shri Giriraj Singh launches India’s first fashion forecasting initiative ‘VisioNxt’

In a landmark event for India’s fashion industry, Union Minister of Textiles, Shri Giriraj Singh, launched the ‘VisioNxt Fashion Forecasting Initiative’ on September 5, 2024. This groundbreaking project, developed by the National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT), is set to transform the Indian fashion landscape by offering AI (Artificial Intelligence) and EI (Emotional Intelligence)-based fashion trend insights. The bilingual web portal and India-specific Fashion Trend Book titled ‘Paridhi 24×25’ were unveiled as part of this initiative. The launch event saw the presence of Union Minister of State for Textiles and External Affairs, Shri Pabitra Margherita, and Textiles Secretary, Smt. Rachna Shah.

The vision behind VisioNxt

Shri Giriraj Singh, during his address, emphasized that the VisioNxt project is a result of the strategic push under the visionary leadership of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi. Post-2014, India has placed increased emphasis on indigenous design and manufacturing, and VisioNxt is a reflection of this shift. This initiative aims to position Indian culture and fashion design on the global stage, fostering healthy competition in the era of fast fashion.

One of the core objectives of VisioNxt is to establish India as a leader in the global fashion sector through AI and EI-based insights. Shri Singh highlighted that these technological advancements will provide the Indian fashion industry with tools to compete globally while retaining a deep connection to India’s rich cultural heritage.

Bridging the gap in fashion forecasting

At the Global Textile Summit in 2017, Prime Minister Modi identified the absence of India-specific real-time trend insights as a major challenge for industry stakeholders. Responding to this need, the Ministry of Textiles, with NIFT Delhi and NIFT Chennai, established VisioNxt to offer tech-driven trend predictions. The centralized hub in Chennai now provides insights specifically tailored for the Indian fashion and retail market.

The VisioNxt initiative combines AI and EI to identify and analyze geo-specific trends, reflecting India’s cultural diversity, socio-economic dynamics, and fashion aspirations. By offering academic courses, consultancy services, and workshops, VisioNxt aims to enhance the skillset of Indian fashion professionals and weavers, furthering India’s dominance in the global fashion arena.

Key features of VisioNxt

VisioNxt’s unique AI-based prediction model, ‘DeepVision’, stands at the forefront of fashion forecasting in India. Using convolutional neural network architecture, this model decodes patterns in fashion trends, identifying key apparel attributes such as style, color, and regional accents. With a dataset comprising over 70,000 primary apparel images and 280,000+ secondary image data, the initiative has created the most comprehensive analysis of Indian fashion to date.

One of the standout aspects of VisioNxt is its ability to identify over 60 categories of Indian wear and 40 categories of Western wear. This capability helps Indian designers and retailers tap into local consumer preferences while reducing reliance on global forecasting agencies.

The ‘Paridhi’ Fashion Trend Forecast Book and the web portal (www.visionxt.in) are available in both Hindi and English, making the information accessible to weavers, manufacturers, retailers, and domestic fashion brands. This is set to empower designers and brands to create consumer-focused collections that resonate with India’s diverse and dynamic market.
